Shetland ponies have lived on the windswept, nearly treeless Shetland Isles for thousands of years, and in the worst winters, the story goes, some foraged seaweed on the shore; Welsh Mountain ponies ran wild in the hills of Wales before the Romans came. And most white ponies are greys: born dark, they get lighter every year.
