Greek to Me

Greek to Me: Icarus, in His Own Words

Icarus tells his own story from the middle of the fall: the workshop, the warning, the kiss, the climb.

You know how this ends.

The chorus stops the most famous fall in Greek myth and makes the boy tell it from the start: his father's workshop in the tower of Minos, the feathers laid out in a row, the warning that was two-sided (too low and the sea soaks the feathers), the kiss Ovid wrote down around AD 8 and most retellings leave out, the three men on the ground who took them for gods, and the climb. Then the chorus lets him go, and the island where his father buried him still has his name. So does the sea.
