Greek to Me: Seven Years with Calypso

Odysseus spent seven of his ten years with Calypso. Odyssey Book 7 gives the seven-year receipt; Book 5 gives him four days to build the raft.

Odysseus spent seven of his ten years with Calypso.

Odyssey Book 7 has Odysseus tell the Phaeacians that Calypso kept him on Ogygia for seven years and sent him away when his eighth year there came round. Book 5 says she held him against his will; after the gods ordered his release, he cut and shaped the timber for his raft in four days and launched on the fifth. The Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens, Scylla and the cattle of the Sun all come before Ogygia, inside the journey's first three years. Book 10 gives one of those years to Circe. The slow part of the voyage was the part where he could not sail.
