Barking Up the Wrong Tree
An earnest bloodhound detective questions an oak tree, and where "barking up the wrong tree" comes from.
He can smell the guilt.
Raccoon hunters in early America went out at night behind hounds that chased a raccoon up a tree and bayed until the hunters came, unless the raccoon had leapt to the next tree. The phrase was in print by 1832, and an 1833 book of Davy Crockett stories mentions "an old coon dog barking up the wrong tree."
