The stone keeps missing.
No ancient source has Daedalus throwing a stone for his feathers. The saying turns up in 1656, in Thomas Hobbes's quarrel with Bishop John Bramhall, who wrote that Hobbes "thinks to kill two birds with one stone" and "satisfieth neither."
