Let the Cat Out of the Bag
Why would anyone put a cat in a bag? We asked a cat. He would like it known he got in himself.
He got in by himself.
The saying first turns up in print in 1760, in a review of a novel about a cat, and the favorite explanation is a market trick: a cat sold in a sack as a piglet. Nobody has found that trick in the old records, so where the saying began is still a secret.
