A sparrow in a trench coat has been everybody's secret source for centuries, and where "a little bird told me" comes from.
He never said that.
The saying probably goes back to Ecclesiastes, which warns that "a bird of the air shall carry the voice." John Heywood's 1546 book of proverbs got its news from one bird that "in myne eare was late chauntyng," Jonathan Swift wrote "I heard the little bird say so" in 1711, and in the 1970s the CIA really did test pigeons carrying tiny cameras.
