Hold Your Horses
A man is straining to hold back a horse. The horse would like to point out she is standing still.
Nobody needs to hold her.
In some English translations of Homer's Iliad, Menelaus shouts at a reckless young chariot driver to hold his horses, and the young man pretends not to hear. The saying as we use it is American: in 1844 a New Orleans newspaper printed "Oh, hold your hosses, Squire. There's no use gettin' riled."
