Wild Goose Chase
A calm wild goose stays one step ahead of an explorer with a net, and where "wild goose chase" comes from.
She has never been caught.
In Shakespeare's England a wild goose chase was a horse race: one rider took the lead and the rest had to follow wherever he went, strung out like wild geese in flight. Gervase Markham described it in 1593, Mercutio used it for a battle of wits in Romeo and Juliet, and in 1755 Samuel Johnson's dictionary called it the pursuit of something "as unlikely to be caught as the wildgoose."
