We asked a very dry cat whether cats fall from the sky. She sent us to the frogs.

The saying turns up in England in the 1650s, and the old tale about pets sliding off thatched roofs was made up much later. Cats and dogs have never fallen from the sky, but waterspouts really can drop frogs and fish, and one town in Honduras holds a festival for its fish rain every year.
